NEW Executive Education Programme 2021

Assumptions Based Planning (Virtual)

This half-day virtual course provides insights, tips and tricks to help you improve the use of assumptions in your organisation's planning processes.

Course Overview

The consultants at Oliver Wight have a saying when it comes to planning, "Don't change a number without changing an assumption".

Assumptions are the "thinking" behind the plan and documenting that thinking is an essential element of an effective planning process. Despite this, many organisations struggle to establish a process to capture, update, document and communicate the assumptions that form the basis of their forward plans. As a result, their planning processes, in particular S&OP and Integrated Business Planning (IBP) are not delivering the value that they should be.

In this course we provide insights, tips and tricks for you to improve the use of assumptions in your organisation's planning processes, to enable the ROI from planning to be increased.

Topics covered include:

  • The value and role of assumptions in planning
  • The importance of documenting and communicating assumptions
  • Elements in creating assumptions – facts, drivers & levers
  • The role of analytics
  • Typical assumptions for an Integrated Business Planning process – product, demand, supply and financial
  • Measuring performance and applying the learning to improve assumptions and plan accuracy
  • Assumptions pitfalls to avoid
  • Keys to successfully implementing an effective assumption based planning process

Your Oliver Wight class leader will provide real-life examples, break-out opportunities for discussion with classmates, and templates that you can take back to your organisation, so that you can apply the concepts back in the workplace.

Who is this course for?

Anyone that is responsible for, or who participates in planning processes. In particular, organisations that are looking to improve the use of assumptions in their S&OP or IBP processes, or whom are looking for a refresher on the key elements for an effective assumptions based planning process.
